Getting laid off is hard enough. Getting laid off because someone in a different country, or a robot, took your job hits harder.
It would be different if they didn't need the work at all, but apparently they do; they just don't value you enough to do it. Message received.
That turmoil can cause you to reassess what you are even doing with your life now that your chosen career path could be at risk from outsourcing or automation. Or maybe you are a current student looking at the job market, wondering if you made a mistake.
A layoff has a way of turning a vague thought ("maybe I should go back to school") into an urgent one. That instinct is reasonable. The problem is that most advice on the subject answers a different question than the one you are actually asking. It tells you which majors pay the most, or which fields are growing fastest.
Neither of those tells you whether the work can be shipped overseas or handed to software in six years, which is right about when you would be finishing your degree and starting to pay for it. It can only give you historical precedent, but in such a rapidly changing environment those statistics may no longer apply.
Outsourcing and automation are two separate threats, and they do not overlap the way most people assume. A job can be nearly impossible to automate and still trivially easy to offshore. Another can be immune to offshoring while software quietly eats it from the inside. If you are going to spend two to four years and a serious amount of money, you want a path that clears both bars, not just one.
Two Different Threats Need Two Different Tests
Automation risk is about task structure. Work that is repetitive, rule based, and expressible in text or numbers is exposed. A Microsoft Research study published in 2025 measured this directly, using roughly 200,000 real conversations with an AI assistant rather than expert guesses, and cross referencing them against federal occupational data. The occupations with the highest exposure were interpreters and translators, writers, customer service representatives, technical writers, editors, and market research analysts. The least exposed were roles built on physical presence and manual skill, including phlebotomists, nursing assistants, surgical assistants, and roofers.
Offshoring risk is about something else entirely: distance. Economist Alan Blinder built the framework most researchers still use, and his test is simple. Can the work be delivered electronically from far away without meaningful loss of quality? If yes, it is offshorable, no matter how skilled it is.
The finding most people get wrong Blinder's analysis found that nearly all of the STEM occupations he examined (35 out of 39) were offshorable, including 10 of 12 engineering specialties. Computer programming ranked at the very top of the offshorable list. More education, by itself, is not protection. What you study matters more than how long you study it. |
That work has not stayed theoretical. India's global capability centers, which are offshore units owned directly by multinational corporations rather than outsourcing vendors, now employ well over two million professionals and are on pace to hire roughly half a million people in 2026 alone. The functions they handle are no longer call centers and data entry. They are software engineering, finance, analytics, cybersecurity, legal operations, and product design.
The Three Filter Test
Before you commit to a program, run the target job through these three questions. A degree path that clears all three is about as protected as a bachelor's degree gets.
Filter 1: Does the work require being physically present?
Not "is it usually done in person," but genuinely required. Can someone in another country do this on a laptop? A nurse starting an IV, an inspector walking a job site, a teacher managing a classroom of second graders: no. A software developer, a financial analyst, a copywriter: yes, and it is already happening.
This is one of the downsides of WFH jobs (I say this as someone who has primarily been working from home for years now). Companies figured that if you didn't want to come back to the office, then they didn't have to keep the work in your country at all. So be wary of careers that can be done mostly remotely, as those are the ones most likely to be on the chopping block for outsourcing.
Filter 2: Does someone have to be accountable for the judgment?
Some work carries personal legal liability that cannot be transferred to a server or a contractor overseas. A licensed engineer stamping a structural drawing is putting their name and license on a building. A social worker deciding whether a child is safe at home is making a call that a system cannot make for them. This kind of accountability is a genuine moat, and it tends to hold even as the tools around the job get better.
One thing to note: accountable in this case means that someone has to put their name to something that could be catastrophic if the results are bad, and "good enough" will not suffice.
In a lot of companies, "good enough" is, well, good enough. You might assume that because your work is higher quality, the company will want to stand behind that quality. Often it won't. If it thinks it can cheap out on labor while holding revenue steady, the quality of your work will not matter.
Filter 3: Is there a licensure or regulatory barrier?
State licensure that requires supervised clinical hours completed in the United States, plus a domestic exam, is a hard wall against offshoring. It is not a permanent guarantee (rules change), but it moves slowly and it is enforced by people with a strong interest in keeping it that way.
Another caveat: just because you earned the credential that is only available in the US (a CPA, for example), your company might decide that it cares more about cheap labor than the prestige of the license. Accounting firms have started outsourcing work to workers in India who hold an Indian Chartered Accountant qualification rather than a CPA, in order to save money. The moat holds where it is legally required (a U.S. CPA still has to sign off on U.S. audits and filings), but for everything short of that, it is narrower than it looks. So it is best to know how much moat a given license will really give you.
How Common Degree Paths Actually Score
The table below applies those filters to paths that people commonly consider when going back to school.

The Paths That Clear All Three Filters
Nursing
Nursing is the clearest answer in the data, and it is not close. Federal projections for 2024 to 2034 put healthcare and social assistance as both the largest and fastest growing sector in the economy (up 8.4 percent, against 3.1 percent for total employment). Healthcare support occupations are projected to grow 12.4 percent. Meanwhile, New York Fed research covering 73 majors found recent nursing graduates at 2.1 percent unemployment and, notably, the lowest underemployment rate of any major measured (12.8 percent), meaning nursing graduates are actually working as nurses rather than settling for jobs that do not need the degree. Early career pay came in around $70,000.
Civil, structural, and power engineering
Engineering is where the offshoring test earns its keep, because engineering is not uniformly safe. Design work that travels as a file is exposed. Engineering tied to a physical location, local code, site visits, commissioning, and a professional license carrying personal liability is not. Power and electrical engineering in particular are in an acute shortage right now, driven by data center construction and grid expansion. Federal projections point to roughly 17,500 additional electrical and electronics engineers needed alongside nearly 400,000 more construction workers by 2033, and industry estimates put the 2026 data center labor gap somewhere between 340,000 and 499,000 unfilled positions.
Construction management
The building is here. So are the crews, the inspectors, the weather delays, and the subcontractor who did not show up. Construction management is one of the cleanest examples of work that fails the distance test completely, and construction services graduates consistently post both very low unemployment and above average early career pay.
Education, especially special education
Special education posted the single lowest unemployment rate of any of the 73 majors the New York Fed examined, at 0.7 percent. Four of the ten lowest unemployment majors were in education. The work is in person relationship building with children, and in special education specifically, the services are legally mandated. The honest caveat is pay, which is the tradeoff you are accepting in exchange for that security.
Social work
Social services came in at 1.9 percent unemployment. The work combines crisis judgment, in person contact, and licensure, which is all three filters at once. Like education, the security is real and the pay is modest.
Degrees That Look Safe But Are Not
● Computer science. Computer science is not the safe harbor it was sold as. Recent computer science graduates posted roughly 7.0 percent unemployment in New York Fed data, and computer engineering around 7.8 percent, both above the rate for recent graduates overall and above majors like philosophy and art history. Entry level software engineering postings fell about 30 percent year over year. The reason is structural, not cyclical: coding is simultaneously the most offshorable occupation Blinder identified and among the most AI exposed. That said, pay remains high (around $87,000 early career, second highest of any major) and federal projections still show 15 percent growth for software developers through 2034. It is a real career with a genuinely brutal entry point.
● General business, marketing, and communications. These majors fail on both tests. The work is document based, non licensed, and easy to scope and move. "Business" as a general major also tends to post high underemployment, meaning graduates end up in jobs that did not require the degree.
I will caveat that executive-level careers for business majors appear immune to most outsourcing and automation. (Mind blowing to me, as I feel those are some of the jobs that could be the most automated.) Nevertheless, unless you went to a top 10 business school, came from an upper middle class family, or worked at one of the major consulting firms, there is no guarantee that you will get into those executive roles. If you do check one of those boxes, then business might actually be a safe career choice for you.
● Medical coding, health information management, and billing. Choosing a healthcare adjacent field is not the same as choosing a patient facing one. Blinder specifically flagged medical transcription, health records handling, and insurance claims processing as healthcare functions that are already offshored. The protection in healthcare comes from touching patients, not from working in the building.
● Accounting. This one is genuinely mixed. The CPA license used to be a real moat, and demand for licensed accountants is strong (but see my note above). Compliance and preparation work offshores heavily, though, and it is one of the more automatable professional workflows. If you go this route, the license is the entire point, not the degree.
Four Honest Caveats
● The data is noisier than the headlines suggest. The most cited major level unemployment figures come from census survey data with small subsamples per major. One analysis found that the 7.5 percent estimate for computer engineering graduates carried a 95 percent confidence interval running from roughly 4 percent to 11 percent. Treat these numbers as directional signals, not precision instruments.
● Safe does not mean lucrative. Special education and social work have the best employment security in the dataset and some of the weakest pay. Security and income are different variables, and you should decide consciously which one you are optimizing for.
● Safe does not mean easy. The paths that resist automation and offshoring resist them precisely because they are physical, emotionally demanding, or both. Nursing and social work have high burnout rates. That is a real cost, and it belongs in your decision.
● Every one of these numbers is a snapshot. Every projection here is a forecast. AI capabilities are moving quickly, and licensure rules are not permanent. The three filter test is more durable than any specific list, so learn the test rather than memorizing the rankings.
Before You Enroll, Do This
● Run the full number, including lost income. Total cost is tuition plus the wages you are not earning while you study. A two year program at $15,000 a year while forgoing $50,000 in salary is a $130,000 decision, not a $30,000 one.
● Check whether a shorter credential opens the same door. Many of the most protected healthcare roles are reachable through associate degrees, accelerated second degree programs, or certificate paths. Accelerated BSN programs for people who already hold a bachelor's degree typically run 12 to 18 months rather than four years. Do not buy a four year degree to get a job that a shorter credential opens.
● Verify licensure requirements in your state first. This is the single most expensive mistake people make. Confirm the program's licensure eligibility in your state, in writing, before you pay anything. Programs are not uniformly accepted across state lines.
● Look hard for someone else to pay. Many hospital systems fund nursing education in exchange for a work commitment, and plenty of employers offer tuition assistance you can use while working. Both dramatically change the math.
● Ask for outcomes data before you commit. Look at whether the specific school's graduates get licensed and hired, not at national averages. Ask for pass rates and placement rates. Any program worth attending will hand them over.
Don't Make Decisions Based Solely On Fear
The safest bachelor's degrees are the ones attached to work that has to happen in a specific physical place, requires a person to be legally accountable for a judgment call, and is gated by a license that is hard to obtain from abroad. Nursing, patient facing allied health, site based engineering, construction management, special education, and social work all clear that bar.
The degrees that fail are the ones where the output is a file. That includes several fields still widely marketed as safe bets, which is exactly why the test is worth running yourself instead of trusting a ranking.
One thing I want to solidify: going back to school is not the only answer to a layoff, and it is often not the best one. Before you enroll, make sure you are choosing a degree because it opens a specific door you have verified is open, not because the job search got discouraging. Those two motivations feel identical from the inside, and they lead to very different places.
